A rare pair of Chantilly Pomegranate Boxes and Covers, of oval shape and each moulded in the form of a bursting fruit, coloured in yellow and red, the seeds inside detailed in tones of iron red and turquoise, each twig handle with lower leaf terminal, the covers with cherry and leaf finials.

Circa 1745

Length: 4 ins (10.2 cms) No Marks

See Geneviève Le Duc, Porcelaine tendre de Chantilly au XVIII siecle, Paris , 1996, pp. 173, 177 for a pomegranate ormolu-mounted as a pot-pourri vase and cover and shell designs after Juste-Aurele Meissonier by the same manufacturer. The present two pots may have been intended as pot à jus in a dessert service or perhaps as jam pots and cover.
