Chelsea oval Dish of silver
shape painted with bouquets, scattered sprigs of coloured flowers and
winged insects.
Circa 1752.
Length: 9 5/8 ins
There is a silver example by Nicholas Sprimont in the Katz collection at
the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
A Fine Chelsea teabowl and saucer, beautifully naturalistically painted
with crested birds within landscape vignettes, beside trees and leafy
shrubs, the teabowl with insects in flight to the reverse and a
caterpillar to the interior, with brown line rims.
c. 1755
Diameter of saucer: 4¾ inches (12 cms)
Marks: Red anchor marks to underside of both pieces and an additional 9 to
the saucer.
The placement of the birds on both pieces, especially on the saucer
recalls the work of the engravings of the artist Charles Fenn, who was
responsible for some of the designs used in the ‘Ladies Amusement.’
