A rare Chelsea white figure of an Owl naturalistically modelled with well delineated plumage perched on a rocky mound base.

Height: 8 3/8 in. (21.3 cm)

Circa 1750

The model, unlike many of the Chelsea birds, is not taken from George Edwards’, ‘A Natural History of Uncommon Birds’, pub. London 1743-47 nor does it appear in Eleazer Albin’s, ‘A Natural History of Birds’ London 1731-38. The realism of the model of the owl, probably a Scops owl is quite extraordinary and has probably been modelled from life, especially for the third eyelid is included which makes the model very ornithologically correct.
