A very fine Chelsea oval platter, the border crisply moulded with “Warren Hastings” moulding, the four scrolled panels edged in puce and painted with harbour scene vignettes, showing figures at conversation and at various pursuits both in puce monochrome and in colour before harbour scenes and distant buildings, framed on either side by cypress and other leafy trees, the centre painted with full sprays and scattered sprigs of European flowers, a shadowed insect and a caterpillar, all within a brown line rim.

Circa 1753

Length: 14 ¾ ins (37.5 cms)
Width: 11 ¾ ins (30 cms)

Red anchor mark just inside footrim.

The inspiration for the style of painting within the vignettes is taken from Meissen porcelain of the 1740’s. The harbour scenes themselves are the rarest of the decoration found within the scrolled panels of the “Warren Hastings” mould, fable decoration from the studio of O’Neale being more frequently found. Also, to be noted on the reverse of pieces with this design, is frequently found a leaf, in every case not covering anything up in terms of a flaw. It has been suggested by Dr. Paul Riley that this could well be a painter’s mark and we are grateful to him for his comments.
