An extremely fine Chelsea
botanical circular fluted dish of rare small size, exceptionally well
painted with flowering and fruiting melons, together with their related
leaves, 2 butterflies and a caterpillar
Circa 1755-58
Diameter: 7 1/2 ins (19 cms)
Mark: Red anchor mark to underside of base
The Chelsea factory also made melon tureens in three sizes, the smallest
with a snail as the finial, see Dr. F.S.Mackenna, Chelsea Porcelain the
Red Anchor Wares, pl. 31 no. 63. The Katz collection, these are 3 ½ ins
high. The middle size which has tendrils and its own tiny yellow flowers
as the finial height of 3 1/2 ins. Finally the largest size with leaves,
flowers and thick tendrils as the finial, these are lifesize. This dish
would have undoubtedly been used in conjunction with such tureens upon the
dinner table. The cracked skin and veining has been particularly well
executed in the two tones of green and ripening colour of yellow. The
other factory to execute melons in this way was the Longton Hall factory,
who made a large melon tureen, cover and stand of the same dimensions as
the large of the three produced at Chelsea. Teapots were also made in this
idiom, see The Bowles Collection of Eighteenth Century English and French
Porcelain, pl. 73. It is more uncommon to find botanical painting on this
fluted circular form than on plates and dishes with lobed rims. The
Chelsea 1755 catalogue March third day, lot 48 describe, ‘Twelve beautiful
scollopt plates, India plants, all different’ it is generally regarded now
that ‘India Plants’ must mean as we now describe ‘Hans Sloane’ type.
