A very early Chelsea raised
anchor scalopendrium teabowl and saucer, the delicately thinly potted
cinquefoil forms moulded in low relief with spiralling hartstongue leaves
coloured in turquoise with yellow and puce details, the interior with a
small sprig of leaves together with berries, both pieces with brown line
rims.
Circa 1749-52.
Diameter of the saucer: 4 ½ ins. (11.5cms.)
Diameter of the teabowl: 2 ½ ins. (6.5cms.)
Applied raised anchor mark to underside of saucer.
The design is taken from Chantilly Porcelain of the 1740’s, the nature of
the berried sprig seen on the inside of the teabowl is especially familiar
in this regard. The design was also used at Worcester during the 1760’s
and 1770’s but with the addition of tiny floral sprigs. At the Chelsea
factory this very unusual form also occurs in conjunction with ‘The Lady
in a Pavilion’ pattern and also a second kakiemon pattern which consists
of banded hedges, flowering prunus and a phoenix in flight both of these
designs were also used on this form at Chantilly.
