A very fine Bow pierced Circular Basket, the flared sides pierced with interlocking circles beneath a scalloped rim, beautifully decorated in great detail and in the delicate tones of the Kakiemon palette with the ‘two quail’ pattern, the iron red and blue birds amongst oriental plants and beside a branch of flowering prunus enriched with gold, surrounded by single iron red foliate sprigs, within an iron red foliage border gilt with flowerheads.

Circa: 1755

Height: 1 ¾ in (4.5 cms)
Width: 5 ½ in (14 cms)

No Mark.

Provenance: The Trollope – Bellew family.

This is the 2nd smallest size of pierced circular dessert basket made at the Bow factory. The early date of 1755 is proved by the exceptional detail of the painter within this pattern, together with the quality of the placing of the gilding and the altogether finely potted nature of the piece. The scalloped rim is beautifully filled with the border pattern to very great decorative effect, and the addition of the butterfly to one side of the quail balances the scene perfectly.
