Fine Derby Porter mug of
cylindrical shape with an angular handle, finely painted with a continuous
view of Derby, from cattle and sheep grazing before the old silk mill,
across to a weir with a group of buildings behind and a toll bridge to the
right, below an elaborate border of scrolls, passion flowers and
anthemions, inscribed on both sides ‘EC’ within a cartouche.
Circa 1815
Height: 13.5 cm ( 6 ½ in)
Crown, crossed batons D mark and “View of Derby” in red.
See Derby Porcelain by John Twitchett p. 218 photo 273 for “most
interesting water colour sketch” by Thomas Martin Randall depicting a view
of Derby from the meadows. It cannot be dated before 1809 as it includes
the Shot-Tower which was erected in that year. This suggests that Randall
stayed at Derby for about 12 years until 1813 when he left for London.
