An extremely rare and highly unusual early Worcester creamboat, the angular tau handle with moulded floral boss lower terminal and rising thumbpiece, the elegantly thinly potted flared ribbed sides painted with sprays of pink flowering peonies, their leaves in tones of green and turquoise trekked in black outline, and beneath the spout flowering prunus in the famille verte palette, the interior rim with an unrecorded border containing panels of single yellow chrysanthemum with blue leaves reserved on shagreen and diaper grounds, edged with red scrolled lines, alternating with further famille verte sprigs and sprays.
Circa 1753
4ins. (10.5cms)
No Marks

There would appear to be no other similarly decorated piece recorded within the literature. The interior shagreen and diaper panels show an innovative charm balanced with the flair of the Worcester factory to mix unusual decorative elements together with different palettes and an initial use of yellow enamel, to create new combinations within their chinoiserie designs, which are characteristic of the beginning of the first decade. The shape was developed in the first two years of the factory’s production and is seen, in this precise form, for just a further two years. The form is seen during the 1730’s at Meissen and is based on a silver shape.
