A very Fine and Rare Longton Hall Cos lettuce tureen, cover and stand, very expertly modelled with every possible naturalistic detail in the veining of the leaves, the cover formed as half the tureen, with a sprig of cauliflower as the finial, the stand formed as several further leaves, the whole coloured in typical two-toned shades of green, the interior of the tureen itself painted with two green leaves and ladybird.

Circa 1755

One of the most robustly rococo natural forms to be found within this middle period at Longton Hall. Longton more than any other factory embraced the natural and imbued it with very strong naturalistic detail to create an underlying sense of man’s control of the natural world.
