An extremely rare and important white Chelsea Coffee or Chocolate Jug, very crisply moulded with acanthus or strawberry leaves extending to the left around the baluster shaped vessel and forming the spout as a lip, supported on six leaf terminals, the faux bamboo handle tied with ribbon in three places, the double ogival cover similarly moulded with acanthus or strawberry leaves, with lobed quadripartite double ogival knopped finial.

Circa 1745-49

Height: 912 ins. (24 cms) No Mark

Provenance: Bellamy Gardner Collection but sold before his sale in 1939, then Private English Collection and by descent to the present owner.

It is interesting to note that only two designs appear on the Coffee or Chocolate Jugs, acanthus or strawberry leaf moulding and also spiralling teaplants, the handle design differs also on each of these.

See F. Severne Mackenna, The Triangle and Raised Anchor Wares, pl. 2, fig.5, for the former.

See John C. Austin, Chelsea Porcelain at Williamsburg , no. 21, for the latter.

There are two types of finial found on this model, the present ogival type and another with leaves and berries.

See Elizabeth Adams, Chelsea Porcelain, fig. 3.6, for the former.

The moulding was also much used on Chantilly porcelain which copies the original Japanese form.
